Design Museum, Helsinki

Design Museum (Finnish: Designmuseo, Swedish: Designmuseet) is a museum in Helsinki dedicated to the exhibition of both Finnish and foreign design, including industrial design, fashion and graphic design. The building is located in Kaartinkaupunki, Korkeavuorenkatu Street, and is owned by the Republic of Finland through the Senate property. The museum, which is 140 years old (2013) and one of the oldest in the world, was first founded in 1873 but has been working in its present premises since 1978, a former school designed by architect Gustav Nyström in 1894 in Neo-Gothic style. In 2002, the museum changed its name from Taideteollisuusmuseo to Designmuseo (Museum of Design) as the original name was too long and complicated. The museum also has a café and shop. The Museum of Finnish Architecture is located in the same quarter of the city.

The museum includes a permanent exhibition on the history of Finnish design from 1870 to the present day, as well as a space for changing exhibitions. The museum's permanent collection consists of over 75,000 exhibits, 40,000 drawings and 100,000 drawings. The Design Museum also organises international tour exhibitions and publishes books and exhibition catalogues. The museum's homepage provides free access to several exhibitions on the Internet dedicated to Finnish design, such as Arabija, Marimekko and designers Kai Franke and Oiva Toikka. The latest web exhibition focuses on design from the 1950s and 60s, the iconic golden era of Finnish design.
