Mildenhall Treasure

The Mildenhall Treasure is a remarkable hoard of Roman silverware dating back to the fourth century AD, making it one of the most artistically valuable and bullion-rich Roman finds in Britain. It was discovered near Mildenhall, Suffolk, in 1942, consisting of over thirty objects, with the Great Dish being the most notable, weighing more than 8 kilograms.

The collection is housed at the British Museum due to its exceptional importance and value, while replicas are on display at a local museum in Mildenhall.

The treasure was found during plowing in January 1942 by Gordon Butcher, who enlisted the help of Sidney Ford, his employer at the time. Many details surrounding the discovery remained unclear, partly due to the wartime context. Initially, they did not recognize the significance of the objects, although Ford had an interest in ancient items. Ford cleaned and used some of the artifacts as everyday utensils while reserving others, like the Great Dish, for special occasions with his family. In 1946, Ford reported the discovery to the authorities after a friend saw the items in his home. An investigation followed, officially designating the find as a "treasure trove," which was subsequently acquired by the British Museum in London.

Initially, there were doubts and rumors about the authenticity of such high-quality Roman silverware being found in Roman Britain. However, subsequent discoveries of similar Roman materials, such as the Hoxne hoard in Suffolk, have dispelled these doubts.

The Mildenhall Treasure contains items of the highest quality in Roman art and craftsmanship, with a general dating to the 4th century. The decorations often feature traditional pagan themes but also reflect the influence of the emerging Christian faith in some minor works, indicative of the changing times in the Roman Empire. While the exact origin of items like the Great Dish remains uncertain, it is believed to have been crafted somewhere in the Mediterranean region.
