HELGE

The small statuette was discovered in the vicinity of Uppåkra Church, and it stands out as one of the more distinctive finds. The figurine potentially represents a lion engaged in combat with two serpents, a motif that aligns with Christian symbolism.

This object exhibits stylistic traits reminiscent of the Frankish-Carolingian artistic style, which was prevalent in regions including present-day France, England, and Ireland, particularly around the 800 AD timeframe. Consequently, this animal figure may be one of the earliest Christian artifacts to have made its way to Uppåkra.

The discovery of this statuette was credited to the archaeologist Bertil Helgesson, hence earning it the name "Helge." It serves as a fascinating testament to the cultural exchanges and influences present in the region during the period, where Christian symbolism began to emerge and integrate with existing traditions and beliefs.
