Silver-gilt strap end fitting

This small decorative object from the 10th century AD, discovered by a metal detector in Warnford, Hampshire, in 2005, is a fascinating piece of art from the late Anglo-Saxon period.

While the object is already incomplete, it still showcases an intriguing three-dimensional depiction of an animal in the distinctive Winchester style of Anglo-Saxon art. The rectangular plate features mounting holes and displays a scene with several intertwined beasts. Notably, one of these creatures, possibly a wolf, is depicted in the act of biting the head of another creature while simultaneously attacking its rump. Though only small traces of gilding remain today, the intricacy of the design and the storytelling nature of the scene provide valuable insights into the artistic and cultural heritage of the time. This object is a testament to the creativity and craftsmanship of the Anglo-Saxon people during this period.
