Decorated copper-alloy lid

This metal disc, dating from the post-medieval period, likely from the 16th century, was uncovered during excavations in the 1970s at the archaeological section of the Winchester Museum on Victoria Road in Winchester, Hampshire.

The disc has a unique design and was probably originally the lid for a small cylindrical box. It features stamped patterns, including a winged deer at the center, set against a stepped background. This item is indicative of a time when the northern suburb of Winchester had relatively low population density. During this period, a large private townhouse was constructed on the site of Hyde Abbey following the dissolution of the monasteries, and even the medieval houses on Victoria Road were demolished.
