Lead seal matrix

This artifact, likely from the medieval era and possibly dating to the 13th century, was discovered during excavations conducted in the 1970s at the archaeological section of the Winchester Museum on Victoria Road in Winchester, Hampshire.

The object in question is a seal matrix, and its legend reads "SIGILL WILEL (M) ISTAR," indicating that it served as the seal of a person named William Starr. In medieval times, seal matrices were often purchased with the central design already in place, and the individual's name or other information would be added at the time of purchase.

The crescent moon depicted on the seal may have been the closest matching design to the surname "Starr." Unfortunately, historical records do not provide further information about this individual, as his name does not appear in property records for Victoria Road or in the known list of personal names from medieval Winchester.
