Round Box Brooch

Between 1000 and 1100, women living on the Scandinavian island of Gotland used casket brooches to fasten scarves around their collarbones, and these brooches also doubled as storage containers for small items. This particular example is adorned with minuscule animals that occupy the intertwined designs on both the top and sides. Viking art during this era typically avoided figurative ornamentation in favor of dynamic patterns inspired by stylized animals.
