Walrus Ivory and paint
Originally thought to be the missing base tablet of The Cloisters cross, this ivory is one of the closest surviving parallels. Within the city walls of Jerusalem, the bound figure of Christ is led before the high priest Caiaphas for trial. The shallow relief and schematic, less resolute figures distinguish this carving from that of the cross. It was probably originally part of a larger narrative cycle on the life of Christ.
