Figure-head

This oak ship's figure, hailing from the Germanic/Roman period, was excavated in Dendermonde, Oost-Vlaanderen, located in the Flemish Region of Belgium. The figure has a height of 149 centimeters.

The figure represents the tip or prow of a ship and is intricately carved from oak. At the tip of the figure, you'll find a round animal head characterized by gaping beak-like jaws, prominent teeth, and eyes. The craftsmanship here is remarkable, as it captures the details of this animal head with precision.

The long stem of the figure is oval in shape and features deep carvings all around. These carvings form a diamond-shaped lattice pattern. A flat rib can be observed at the front and back of the stem. At the base of the figure, there is a tenon protruding, which is perforated for attaching a dowel.

This ship's figure is not only a testament to the artistry of its time but also provides valuable insight into the maritime history and culture of the Germanic and Roman periods in the region.
