Female figurines

The bronze women from the period spanning 1000-500 BC in Scandinavia are intriguing figures. They are not completely unclothed; instead, they all wear necklaces. These figures convey a sense of authority and power through their body language. Their gestures are assertive, with their hands positioned beneath their breasts. Their expressions appear stern, and their hair is depicted as very short, almost resembling a bald head. Despite these attributes, these figures have been associated with the goddess of fertility.

It appears that belief in a strong female deity began to emerge in Scandinavia during the late Bronze Age. A significant number of neck rings, similar to the ones worn by these small figurines, have been found as offerings in bogs. It is possible that the concept of this goddess was influenced by the East Mediterranean, where similar female figurines depicting gods existed during the earlier Bronze Age.

These bronze figurines have been discovered in various regions, including Blekinge, Skåne, and Västergötland, providing valuable insights into the religious beliefs and cultural influences of the time.
