Plate for a lock of copper-alloy

Dating back to the medieval era, possibly from the 13th to the 14th century, this artifact was discovered in the 1970s during an excavation of the archaeological section of the Winchester Museum on Victoria Road in Winchester, Hampshire.

Locks and keys uncovered during archaeological excavations are typically constructed from iron for durability and strength. However, this particular lock is made from copper alloy, suggesting that it was part of a delicate container, possibly a small box or chest. The container itself was likely crafted from a perishable material, most likely wood, which unfortunately did not withstand the test of time and has not survived to the present day.
