1250–1300.
British or French.
This brooch is made of gold, sapphire and garnet.
Brooches such as this were among the most frequently made items by jewelers. Simple and repetitive in design, the quality of this jewelry could vary greatly. This is an example of a more finely crafted gold brooch.
In addition to the relatively lively floral ornamentation, it is decorated with semi-precious stones rather than glass inlay.
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 304.
