Casket

Type of School/Design: Jellinge style; Trewhiddle style

Historical Era/Civilization: Viking; Late Anglo-Saxon

Creation Date: Early 10th Century

Materials Used: Silver

Description: This artifact is a silver engraved rectangular side panel that originally belonged to a house-shaped tomb casket. The engraved decoration on the panel features three circles, each with even borders. Inside each circle is an equilateral cross with a central punch. These crosses have a distinctive feature of a narrowed middle rib, and on the two horizontal arms of the cross on the right, the middle rib transforms into a narrow border. The remaining margins, both within the circles and between them, are adorned with interwoven triquetra patterns, with the central one being embossed, while the others are simple.

The corners of the plate have perforations for attachment, and the entire ornamental pattern is enclosed by a beaten line, although it is missing in the lower right corner. The plate has been trimmed and punched for secondary rivets, and the back side is flat.

This artifact showcases a combination of design elements from both the Jellinge style and the Trewhiddle style, reflecting the artistic influences and cultural interactions of the Viking and Late Anglo-Saxon periods.
